We created the concept, direction and live visuals for Floating Points‘ CASCADE show, where analogue brushstrokes meet digital echoes. Classified by the Guardian as a “Retina-bending show” this is a live, synesthetic collaboration, creating real-time images and light effects that break the 4th wall.
The show explores the interplay between the analogue gesturality of live painting (and its vibrant bursts of color) and the digital, real-time generation of post-processed visuals shaped by sound. Alongside ‘Alivepainting’ artist Akiko Nakayama, we create live light refractions and generative content, all shaped and modulated through the rhythm of sound and live video sources.
We work with both Akiko’s in-camera content and our own, as well as other live camera feeds, mixing them into a seamless visual flow that reacts in real time to the oscillations and pulses of Floating Points’ modular synths and drum machines.
The experience unfolds inside the stage design of Will Potts and Ed Warren, whose lighting design and reactive operation transform video art into volumetric light waves and sound-reactive structures. We all work together (live artists and musicians) as a jazz ensemble, creating a dynamic conversation between different mediums to enhance the experience of Floating Points’ music in unexpected ways.
The result is a manifestation of music on screen; a fusion of tangible materials and intangible physicalities, where video signals dance with music, light, and moments of darkness.
