Radical Science
Art Comission, 2025
Radical Science is an audiovisual work that expands from the vastness of the universe and general relativity to the microscopic scale of subatomic worlds. It unfolds as a visual journey shaped by real experiments captured on camera and inspired by the research fields of the scientific centres involved in the project: Institut de Ciències Fotòniques, Institut de Física d’Altes Energies, ALBA Synchrotron, and Institut for Bioengineering of Catalonia. The project was nurtured through close engagement and site visits to these centres, allowing for a direct, first-hand experience of the research and its investigators, rather than a formal residency.
Drawing from both artistic practice and scientific methodology, Hamill employs in-camera effects and phenomena of light and physics, informed by investigations carried out in physics, bioengineering, photonics, and quantum research. The project reflects a shared curiosity between art and science, amplifying the poetic dimension of scientific imagery.
By researching methods that intensify visual phenomena produced by the interactions of matter and light, Hamill carried out experiments that probe the depths of the macroscopic world, unfolding its hidden universes. The work translates high-energy phenomena, such as black holes, into the scale of petri dishes, creating sensory landscapes where light collides with sound and matter to reveal the beauty of scientific imagination. Worlds within worlds, dreamlike yet precise, where the properties of things appear with renewed wonder.
